Birds are a lovely addition to any garden. They help control pests, increase biodiversity and they are great for kids to learn about life cycles. Kids can easily make a feeder that will help attract birds into your garden. We made a bird feeder for our garden that was inspired by a post on Spoonful. The birds love eating from it and we love watching them.
To make your own bird feeder you will need:
- An empty plastic drink bottle with a cap
- A sharp knife
- Two perches (we used wooden spoons)
- Bird seed (we used a wild bird mixture)
- Spoon
- Funnel
- An eye screw
- 50cm string
- Cut some small slits into the bottom of the soft drink bottle for drainage (this is something we didn’t do originally and our seed started to sprout!)
- Cut two small holes opposite each other into the side of the plastic bottle about 8cm from the base. Slide one of the wooden through both holes to create one perch. Turn the bottle 90 degrees, cut another set of holes opposite each other about 12cm from the base and then thread through the other wooden spoon to create a second perch.
- Fill the bottle with bird seed using a spoon and funnel.
- Screw the eye screw into the top of the cap and thread string through the hook.
- Screw cap onto the top of the bottle.
- Hang your bird feeder in a tree, eaves or a place where birds will feel safe.
- Sit back with the kids and watch the birds come into your garden and enjoy your feeder.
